Lucent's Schizoaffective Disorder Treatment

NAVIGATING SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDER AT LUCENT

Understanding Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizoaffective disorder is a mental health disorder that is marked by a combination of schizophrenia symptoms, such as hallucinations or delusions, and mood disorder symptoms, such as depression or mania.

What is Schizoaffective Disorder?

The two types of schizoaffective disorder — both of which include some symptoms of schizophrenia — are:

  • Bipolar type, which includes episodes of mania and sometimes major depression
  • Depressive type, which includes only major depressive episodes

What is Mania?

Mania is a period of elevated mood, excessive energy, racing thoughts, inflated self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, reckless behavior, and/or poor judgment.

What is Depression?

Depression involves persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, worthlessness, loss of interest in activities, fatigue, changes in appetite or weight, difficulty concentrating, and sometimes thoughts of death or suicide.

Types of Schizoaffective Disorder

Bipolar Type

This type of schizoaffective disorder involves episodes of mania, which are characterized by elevated mood, increased energy levels, and sometimes reckless behavior. Individuals with bipolar type schizoaffective disorder may also experience periods of major depression, which involve persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest or pleasure in activities.

Depressive Type

Unlike the bipolar type, the depressive type of schizoaffective disorder primarily consists of major depressive episodes. These episodes are marked by the same symptoms as those experienced in major depression, such as pervasive feelings of sadness, fatigue, changes in appetite or weight, sleep disturbances, and sometimes thoughts of death or suicide. Individuals with the depressive type do not experience manic or hypomanic episodes.
